Adventure Time and Weekly Wishes

Jonathan and I are headed to Northern Cali for the Manifest Gathering this weekend, so while we are road tripp’n and yoga-ing it up… I wont be posting. Yea… sorry, we will be camping and I just don’t think there will be an internet connection. But I will be thinking of all of you I promise.

I’m really excited for this weekend. Jonathan and his friend got excepted to teach Yoga and a “Yoga for breakdancing” workshop at the festival, so I’m pumped for that! Also we are driving about 8 hours to get there so you know what that means… ROAD TRIP!!!! I love road trips… you know that. I’ve posted about them here, here and here.

The Nectar Collective

On another topic, I’ve committed to this Weekly Wishes Linkup from The Nectar Collective. Melyssa (I know crazy huh, her name is my name but with a M) is the genius behind this fun, motivating idea. Each week people from all over the internet world make wishes or set goals for themselves and share about it… sounds right up my alley huh?

So what’s my goal? Well… since I just purchased a new camera my goal is to take at least 10 pictures a day for the next week. I figure it’s the best way to learn how to use it. And since we are going on a little mini adventure I thought it would be perfect timing.

We’ll see how the pictures turn out. I’m excited to see what crazy things I can capture. Wishing you all a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by!
Much love,
Elyssa

How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

I often get asked how one can eat healthy on a budget. I do have to admit that eating healthy can get expensive at times but if you know your way around it you can keep some extra cash in your pocket and less calories in your belly. Just keep in mind that what you put in your body is going to be a reflection of how you feel. So maybe cut back in other areas and put a little extra cash towards what you are eating. Remember that your body is a temple… treat it that way. Here are some simple ways to stick to a budget and stay healthy.

You don’t have to buy everything organic.
This one is tough for me because I like to buy organic not just because it’s better for my health but it’s also better for the environment. But I can understand that if you are on a budget buying organic my not always be an option. Check out the Dirty Dozens list. It is a list everything you should buy organic… like apples, berries, things with really thin skin. Everything else you may get away with not purchasing organic.

Add a little spice.
Herbs and spices are a really cheap way to add nutrition to your food. Plus they add flavor without the calories. They can also replace sauces and dressing that sometimes add a ton of calories and may cost more. Some good herbs to have around: basil, italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, cumin, fennel, garlic.

Canned foods.
For me I do my best to avoid canned foods but when you are on a budget they can be a good alternative to always buying fresh. Things to look out for when buying canned goods: make sure the cans you are purchasing are free of dents and bumps and purchase canned products that are labeled “BPA free” can lining. BPA is an industrial chemical found in many products that may harm your health. When buying canned fish, make sure to buy fish packed in water. Avoid buying anything with added salt… we are trying to stay healthy here, not add a bunch of unneeded sodium to our diets.

Frozen veggies & fruit.
Buying frozen produce keeps your costs down but nutrient levels high. It also makes life easier when it comes to preparing meals in a jiffy. Goods ones to keep on hand: spinach, carrots, zucchini, and peas. Also keep an eye out for specials, for example, if blueberries are 5 boxes for $5, buy them and freeze what you don’t need right away. Avoid frozen meals, I know they are tempting but they are not good for you. You maybe could get away with Amy’s Organic Brand but still… do your best to prepare it yourself.

Eat your beans and rice.
When beans and rice are combined, they create a “complete protein.” A complete protein is one that has all the amino acids your body needs to function at it’s best. It’s also high in fiber, meaning you’ll stay fuller, longer. Use brown rice, choose beans that you love and add veggies. It’s a cheap meal but super good for you.

Sweet potatoes.
They are an excellent source of vitamins A and C and may play a role in fighting inflammation in the body. Sweet potatoes are also lower on the glycemic index than white potatoes. They are cheap and keep for a long time when stored properly.

Buy in bulk.
Buying foods in bulk saves you on packaging costs. Stuff like nuts, seeds, oats, quinoa, rice, beans, lentils, and cereal can usually all be found in bulk bins and health food stores. Even places like Vons are starting to provide bulk foods. Stock up, store in a cool dry place and save yourself a little cash.

Eat with the season.
If it’s in season it usually means it will be cheaper because there is an abundance of it. It’s better for your health to eat with the season anyway, so it should pretty much be a rule of thumb.

Shop the specials in the fish and meat departments.
When at the store browse the fish and meat departments (if that’s what your in to) for any specials they me running. You can sometimes find some really good deals on fresh fish and meats, and also have an opportunity to try somethings you have never tried before.

Stop eating meat.
To be honest, meat is expensive, the meat industry sucks and in the long run it’s just not that good for you. So you can always cut out meat… that would do your health wonders and save you a ton of cash!

Buy generic brands.
Sometimes the store brands are just as good as name brands (that is not always true for clothing though). For example if you have a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods around they have a TON of generic brands that are just as good but half the price of name brands.

Buy local.
Simple… the less it has to travel and the less packaging it needs the cheaper it is.

Avoid Impulse Buying.
The best way to avoid impulse buying is to prepare yourself before you do the grocery. Eat prior to shopping… we’ve all been there, starving standing in aisle 2 staring at the cookies… not do it. Eat beforehand. Make a list and stick to it.

Use coupons.
I know some ladies out there that save hundreds of dollars a month using coupons. If you have the patience to cut the coupons do it.

K… get out there and save some cash and feel confident that eating healthy is possible. Thanks for reading… love you guys.

I Am Grateful For…

When I’m driving I like to say out loud all the things I’m grateful for. I picked up this habit from the 90 Days of Shift and I can’t explain enough how it’s made a difference in my life. I have abundance everywhere. If I feel lack I focus on abundance and like magic sprinkles it’s there.

I had a fun day with my parents today in Temecula but it’s about an hour drive from where I live in Sandy Ego San Diego… sooo I had plenty of time to go through and say all the things I’m grateful for. Here are a few of them…

I Am Grateful for…

My parents… cuz they’re badass.
My Dad… he’s where I get my sweet tooth from.
My Mom… cuz no matter what that woman always stays strong.

Random acts of poetry… yea… stuff like this just happens.

Weekends = Brunch

One thing I love about the weekends is BRUNCH! Maybe it’s because I eat healthy all week and brunch is an excuse to drink mimosas and eat waffles. We are making an effort to try out a different place each weekend. Yesterday we went to Alchemy in South Park.

Overall it was pretty good. The place has super rad decor… paintings from a local artist, books on the ceiling, a giant metal tree sculpture and white leather booth seats. Service was mellow, didn’t come back to the table too often but when they did they were super sweet. Jonathan ordered the Fried Chicken & Waffles (apparently the best in town) and I ordered just waffles with a side of eggs. If you ever go to Alchemy and get waffles I would recommend sharing waffles, four is just too many for one person. The coffee is great and they have all sorts of fun specials, full bar and not to mention (for you bacon lovers out there) Bacon Bloody Mary’s – not my cup of tea but I’m sure they are wonderful.

I also got a chance to try out my new camera. Still don’t quite know what I’m doing with it but the pictures seemed to turn out ok…

After breakfast we went driving around South Park looking for some street art. We found a couple spots with some really rad work.

5 Things I Love Thursday

Oh wait… it’s Friday, and Friday night at that. Oh well… my Thursday flew by and I literally was home for about 10 minutes the whole day. But that doesn’t mean I still can’t post what I’m loving! So in that case… HAPPY FRIDAY!

1. My Rebel
What is that you see in the upper right corner of the pic? Yes… you are correct, I got myself a new camera… FINALLY! I’ve been talking about it forever, so I finally bought one… a Canon Rebel T3i. Now all I have to do is learn how to use the thing.

2. Mochi Ice Cream
These little balls of goodness are starting to catch on as one of my favorite desserts. They are these sweet, fruity ice cream balls wrapped in soft fluffy dough and dusted with a white powdery coating. My favorite flavors… Green Tea, Strawberry, and Mango.

3. A Spoonful of Peanut Butter
As some of you may know I am obsessed with PB Peanut Butter. I just picked up the white chocolate flavor at the last farmers market and I just can’t help to eat it by the spoonful. Screw bread, bread just takes the flavor away. Spoonfuls for me please.

4. Home Art Gallery
I found this pic on Pinterest (of course I got sucked in, it happens). I love the idea of hanging pieces of art as if in a gallery. We’ve got a bunch of art on the walls in the living room… might have to change it up a bit.

5. Getting Photo Tagged
I don’t always like being tagged in photos on Facebook, cuz you know, they may not always be the best photo of you. But sometimes… sometimes someone catches a photo of you and you didn’t even know they were taking one and it turns out to be one of your all time favorites.

Thanks for hanging out! Have a wonderful weekend!

Crap Healthy People Don’t Eat

When it comes to being healthy and staying that way there are some things that you just don’t eat anymore. I’ve been in the business for a decade now… jeez… when I put it like that it seems like such a long time… anyway… and I’ve trained many different types of people. When it comes down to it, the people who lose weight and KEEP it off and all in a healthy way just don’t eat the things below.

What you wont find on the this that you may be surprised about is sugar. Most people eat sugar at some point. They treat themselves to a dessert for their birthday or have a glass of wine after a hard day at work. If someone truly never ingests some type of sugar I’d love to see it.

Just avoid the following things if you are really wanting to be healthy and stay that way. Working out is a good idea too… it’s my job, I have to say that ;) but seriously though, just keep active and fuel your body with the good stuff k?

Crap Healthy People Don't Eat | The Wellness Doer

1. Soda – Coke, Pepsi, Sprite… all of it, even diet. What’s the point? It’s like liquid candy. It is empty calories full of sugar. Diet is even worse because it’s the fake sugar they add that causes all sorts of yucky stuff in the body. Soda has been linked to diabetes, bad teeth, obesity (duh), I mean those three things alone are enough to stop drinking it yes? If you really must have a soda, and I mean really really… then reach for a natural soda made with real stuff, like real sugar.

2. Fast Food – Fast food is convenient but one thing I’ve noticed with myself and my clients is that fast food just isn’t an option anymore. McDonalds, Wendy’s, Jack-in-the-Box, all of them… no bueno. The truth is that nothing that any of those fast food restaurants serves is going to beneficial to your health. Maybe just the water. The meat… ugh… I don’t even want to go there, I bet you you can find GMO’s and really when it comes down to it it really doesn’t do a body good. Don’t feed it to your kids either… no wonder why child obesity rates are up. If you want a burger, spend a little extra cash and get a GOOD one. One made with real meat and fresh veggies.

3. Fried Food – Just don’t do it. It’s food dipped in batter then dunked in hot oil until cooked to a crisp. No… just not happening. The only thing I would let my clients get away with is the occasional tempura sushi roll.

4. High Processed Foods – Healthy people care about what goes in their bodies. They are not about to put something in their body that has sixteen ingredients and thirteen of them they can’t pronounce. Less ingredients the better… and you should know what they all are.

junk_food_benny_4

5. Candy – It’s like soda. Empty and has no nutritional value. Fake flavors, fake colors and who knows what else. Stay away… stay very far away. Frozen grapes have been a big hit with my clients when they are wanting a sweet snack, frozen blueberries work too. If you love your sour candy, try golden berries or for a little chocolate crunch… chocolate covered hemp seeds.

I care about people’s health. I care about your health… and I just can’t stress enough how important it is to avoid the above foods. Time an time again as people start making healthier choices and start feeling better and then try to go back to eating the junk food… they can’t do it. They feel sick or grossed out. Your body knows what is good for it, so give it what it wants.

Aren’t the illustrations adorable… wish I knew the artist.

Hope this helps. Thank you for reading!!!!!
Much love,
Elyssa
