7 Things I (Re)Learned at Lightning in a Bottle
With a few days of settling back into the real world after Lightning in a Bottle I had some time to reflect on my experience. I danced my ass off, stayed up late, watched the sun set and rise, did yoga, got a tan, meditated, cried and met some really awesome people. Every year I attend LIB it blows my mind… yes yes the music is great and all the art is unreal but what brings me to tears is the lessons I learn (or maybe I should say reminded of) and the connections that are made… allow me to explain (plus share some photos)…
1. Family matters.
Nothing is more important than having people around you that just want you to be you. And they don’t have to be people that are blood related either, it can be a group of friends that really know what it is to be family. I am so grateful for the family I got to share the weekend with and the people that somehow just got sucked in to the crew. It’s important to have people in your life that love you regardless, that will sit there and listen and let you be as is. They see you as a God or Goddess regardless of what you are going through. Not everybody can be that person for us. When you find those people you know it.
2. Love IS ALL YOU NEED.
Really. There was a tremendous amount of love that filled the air at LIB between everyone. The biggest thing for me this weekend is realizing that just because someone isn’t there physically with me doesn’t mean they aren’t with me at heart. When all the bullshit is set aside all you have left is love… and that is all that matters. Another thing on this topic is to love without conditions… big lesson for me and probably for all of us. It’s easy to say but takes a bit of effort to do, not because it’s hard but because of past conditioning… practice loving unconditionally… it will warm your heart.
3. No body gives a shit.
Seriously… no body cares if you want to wear a blue tutu with a hot pink wig and a Santa’s hat… if that’s your thing then f#@king rock it! It is so beautiful to me to see people being comfortable in wearing what they want. Whether that’s a black t-shirt and a pair of shorts or a red jump suit… it doesn’t matter… everyone loves you anyway. I also loved to see how comfortable everyone was in their own skin. Full self expression all around, everyone embracing the God and Goddess within. Maybe that wasn’t the fact for some but in a place like that, you could be as comfortable or uncomfortable as you wanted… you were still loved.
4. Every body gets down.
I don’t care who you are, you know you like to get down. And by “get down” I mean rock out, party, let loose, whatever. We all have our own expression of it. One of my favorite memories from this past weekend was the 4:30 dance party to DJ Pumpkin… completely sober, sun shining, in flip flops… I’m in the front with a few friends and I turn around and see hundreds of people behind me all getting down, throwing their hands up, and all have the biggest smile on their faces… there is just something about seeing that scene that makes me so happy. Happy people make me happy.
5. Love your surroundings.
The people of The Do Lab put a lot of time and energy into making the festival as eye appealing as possible, plus they make it as earth friendly as possible. The lesson here is that sometimes in our everyday life we forget to stop and look around and take in the beauty that the world has to offer. Being present is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves and others… being present allows you to take it all in, to see the beauty that is around and within us.
6. Sometimes you just have to let go.
Sometimes we want things to go a certain way but sometimes the universe just doesn’t want that for us in that moment. All we can do is let go… not everything is going to go the way you want and you just have to go with the flow. These are the moments that I cried and not because I was sad but because I had to stop resisting. To love what is created in one’s self in order to let go is a beautiful thing. Realizing and accepting that what is happening in the current moment is exactly what needs to be happening. It all works out in the end. It can beard, believe me I know but I swear to you it always has a beautiful ending.
7. At just the right time.
Things seem to happen at just the right time. This one kinda ties into #6… when you let go, things just seems to unfold in the most beautiful of ways. And maybe it’s just the vibe that is present at these festivals because everyone is letting loose and having fun, but if you need water, someone will give you water at just the right time. Food, a hug, a place to camp, or maybe it’s that person you haven’t seen in a long time. I think it’s really important to make every moment matter, find the good in everything and be happy for the sake of being happy… and everything you want will come to you.
Big thanks to The Do Lab for putting together another amazing year at Lightning in a Bottle, can’t wait till next year!!!
