Simple Pleasure #10: Peace Pies
Doesn’t this look delicious…???
Guess what it is made of? All raw ingredients. Yep, nothing is cooked, it’s vegan, gluten free, soy free and amazingly yummy. It comes from a cute little place in Ocean Beach called Peace Pies and I happen to live right across the street. I’m completely addicted to their green smoothie – which I’m not quite sure what’s in it – but oh so yummy. They offer all sorts of raw juices including kombucha (simple pleasure #37) and hemp mylk. If you are feeling hungry you can grab a some Kale Chips or Crackas n’ Hummus to start then, devoure a slice of Peace Pizza (my favorite) or a Veggie Nori Roll. Finish with a slice of any of their fabulous raw pies, which I have to add has to be at the top of my favorite desserts list. They are all good – trust me, I’ve tried them. 🙂
So why raw food you ask???
Eating raw has it’s health benefits. People who embrace this type of diet invariably experience improvements in their general physical and mental status, including more energy, better health, more energy, weight loss, detoxification, and a sturdier immune system that better resists and recovers from just about any kind of disease. Living and raw foods also have enormously higher nutrient values than foods that have been cooked. I personally do not eat a 100% raw food diet but I am also not against it. I would have to say that about 60 – 75% of my diet comes from raw foods.
Why is it a simple pleasure? I am amazed at how extraordinary the foods are. Everything that I have tried has been flavorful whether sweet or savory. It’s always fresh and always delicious. The people that work there are super friendly and willing to answer any questions you might have. It’s a place that brings a smile to my face – which counts as a simple pleasure – which is why it’s on the list.
If you live in San Diego, you should give them a try and let me know what you think. They are also at a handful farmers markets for those of you not in Ocean Beach. And for all of you that don’t have the opportunity to drive down the street I have included a raw recipe for you to try at home! Indulge!
Quick and Simple Apple Pie:
1 1/2 cups sunflower seeds
3/4 cup raisins
1 tablespoon carob powder
5-6 medium sized apples peeled and cored
3/4 cup raw, unfiltered honey
1 tablespoon Cinnamon
Juice from 1/2 lemon
Dash of cloves (optional)
Make the crust by placing the sunflower seeds, raisins and carob powder in a food processor and process with the “S” blade until finely ground and mixture sticks together. Line a 9″ pie pan with this mixture and form the crust. Take the apples, and pulse chop with the “S” blade into small pieces. (Be sure not to overdo it and make apple sauce!) In a bowl, mix the chopped apples, cinnamon, lemon juice and honey and dash of cloves together. Scoop the mixture into the pie crust. Level out with a spatula. Sprinkle on Coconut flakes on top of the mixture. For best results, place in refrigerator for 1 hour to allow pie to set. Enjoy!
